5 Ways to Move in the Motor City

At Paceline, we believe that all movement is good movement. In this franchise, we explore creative and fun ways to stay active in cities around the world, straight from writers who have lived there. First up: Detroit.

Whether you live in the Motor City or you’re just passing through, now is a great time to be active. Paceline was recently named an official partner of the Detroit Pistons, and the two brands have come together to motivate and reward fans and the community for being active as part of their #MoveMotown campaign. The best part? There are plenty of ways to get moving in and around Detroit. Below, five ideas to get you going.

1. Take a (river) walk.

Fun fact: The Detroit International RiverWalk was voted the best riverwalk in the country earlier this year. Not only is it ideal for a walk or run, according to Visit Detroit, but you can also relax in the Garden Rooms, visit the RiverWalk Café, or rent a bike at Wheelhouse Detroit at Cullen Plaza

2. Live the island life.

Belle Isle Park is an island in Detroit (specifically, on the Detroit River) that offers plenty of opportunities to get moving. You can golf, ride bikes, and swim at the beach during the summer. Alternatively, you can visit attractions like the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory or the Belle Isle Aquarium.

3. Hit the ice at Campus Martius Park.

The Rink returns this November, and skating beneath the Christmas tree is a fun and festive activity. Plus, ICYMI, Detroit is Hockeytown—so it’s only right to go skating if you find yourself in the city between November and March.

4. Paddle in the Lower Peninsula.

If you’re willing to venture outside of Detroit (and you’re game for water sports), consider heading to the Huron River Water Trail for some paddling fun. Through the trail’s website, you can find trip-planning tips and resources, including info on where to locate everything from easy paddling opps to rapid runs for experienced kayakers.

5. Unplug at Detroit Yoga Lab.

At this beautiful yoga studio in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood, you can choose from a variety of class types, disconnect from daily stress (cell phones aren’t allowed in studios), and even pick up some swag at the boutique. Just remember to register for class in advance!
