Paceline and Trees for the Future Want You to Work Out to Save the Planet

Users of the Popular Retail Wellness Platform Paceline Can Choose Trees for the Future as their Reward Donation

SAN FRANCISCO, April 7, 2020 - Paceline, the first retail health and wellness platform that incentivizes consumers to live a healthy lifestyle, has announced that it has teamed up with Trees For the Future to celebrate the planet all month long.

Paceline users can choose Trees for the Future as their reward donation during the month of April. Since 1989, Trees for the Future has planted over 200 million trees and changed hundreds of thousands of lives through their approach. The organization trains farmers in developing countries to use sustainable farming methods that not only benefit the planet but also end poverty and hunger.

“As active individuals, we are dedicated to bringing awareness to our planet and to save our nature’s gym,” said Joel Lieginger, CEO and founder of Paceline. “Trees for the Future has planted over 200 million trees and changed hundreds of thousands of lives. As a Pacer, you can help be part of the change.”

Paceline is the only retail wellness platform that rewards and incentivizes physical activity with material financial benefit from consumer health and wellness brands and retail financial services - from credit cards and banking to life and health insurance. The platform tracks physical activity through wearables and leverages customer spending data, accessed through a linked credit card, to curate health and wellness rewards. Paceline is using this data to build financial products from the inside out, starting with the first health and wellness credit card and dynamically priced life insurance products to change the nature of preventive health in society.

Today, the majority of healthcare investment is focused on better treating those who are already chronically ill with conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Paceline was built to keep people from suffering from these chronic diseases in the first place. The company does this by providing significant incentives to live an active lifestyle, which is one of the most important contributors to long term health.

"Partnering with Paceline means so much to us because not only will we be able to make more positive change but also because their values align so perfectly with ours,” said John Leary, Executive Director of Trees for the Future. “Paceline is all about healthy living and with this new partnership, they show their commitment to a healthy planet, too. With this dedication, we will be able to come closer to our goal of planting 500 million trees by 2025. Thank you Paceline for going the extra mile to plant trees and change lives."

Through Trees for the Future’s 4-year training program, called the Forest Garden Approach, farmers plant thousands of trees that protect and bring nutrients back to the soil. This helps farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables. Forest Garden farmers gain increases in income and access to food, even in the first year, all while improving the environment.

Paceline members have already logged over 12 million workouts, and over 350 million Paceline minutes, and over increasingly longer streaks with the earliest members maintaining 60+ weeks of consistent long-term activity.  Since the launch of its beta program in January 2020, Paceline customers have earned and redeemed more than 358 thousand rewards to more than 60 brand partners representing more than $940,000 in rewards value and they are just getting started.

Paceline Announces $5 Million Venture Capital Investment Round

The Company is the Only Retail Wellness Platform that Rewards Physical Activity with Financial Benefit

SAN FRANCISCO, November 20, 2020 - Paceline, the first retail health and wellness platform that incentivizes consumers to live a healthy lifestyle, has announced a $5 million seed investment co-led by Montage Ventures and Propel Venture Partners, with participation from Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, Courtside Ventures, GreatPoint Ventures, Lux Capital, Clocktower Technology Ventures, NextView Ventures, and angel investor Mark McCombe, Senior Managing Director at BlackRock, in his personal capacity.

“Having spent my career in insurance and banking, I know that healthier consumers are also better customers. They buy more, cost less, and drive substantially greater profitability across financial products,” said Joel Lieginger, CEO and founder of Paceline. “But our goal isn’t just to build a financial services company focused on healthy customers; we’re building a platform that helps people live healthier, longer, and better lives by giving them significant financial rewards and access to products and brands they love for doing the things that will improve their health both now and in the long run.”

The financial services industry represents more than a third of total corporate profit worldwide, and building vertical finance through health and wellness and across credit, banking, and insurance represents an unprecedented market opportunity. Paceline is creating a flywheel that drives a virtuous cycle of shared value between consumers, health and wellness partners, and financial services products that is a win-win-win model that will change the nature of preventive health in society.

“We are thrilled to be supporting Paceline’s mission to promote healthier lifestyles. Physical and financial health are tightly connected for the overall wellbeing of the consumer and at Paceline we have the opportunity to reward healthy consumers, and incentivize less healthy ones, with material financial benefit through financial products that better match their lifestyle.” Jay Reinemann, General Partner at Propel Venture Partners.

Paceline members have already logged over 1.2 million workouts, and over 65 million exercise minutes, and over increasingly longer streaks with the earliest members maintaining 40+ weeks of consistent long-term activity. Since the launch of its beta program in January 2020, Paceline customers have earned and redeemed more than 100,000 rewards to more than 50 brand partners representing more than $500k in rewards value and they are just getting started.

Veteran's Day Spotlight: Over Easy Founder, Kyle Maggard

For Over Easy’s Founder, Kyle Maggard, mornings have always been “get up and go” – whether as a West Point cadet, a college athlete, an Army officer, and especially now as a husband, father, and entrepreneur. Sick of having to choose between a dense protein bar that tastes artificial or a pastry loaded with sugar, Over Easy was born with a mission to deliver a convenient, healthy and most importantly delicious, way to start your day! Below Paceline chats with Kyle on his inspiration behind Over Easy and how his military experience prepared him for entrepreneurship.

P: How did your military experience prepare you for the demands of building your own business?

K: “In the military, you’re constantly thrown in new, challenging, and often uncomfortable positions and situations – often by design, and nearly every single day. I’ve found that the key to success is not to evade these situations or to seek an easier path, but rather to face them head on and treat them as opportunities to get a little stronger, tougher, sharper, and more proficient. It’s why the phrase “embrace the suck” has become a mantra in the military – if you want to be tough, you have to go through some tough times.

I’ve applied the same mentality as an entrepreneur. This journey has been a complete roller coaster, filled with constant challenges, uncertainty, self-doubt, unbelievable highs, and devastating lows – and I’m really just getting started. However, the military taught me to expect and “embrace the suck” rather than wishing everything is going to get easier. Entrepreneurship is hard, and it’s supposed to be hard. In my opinion, thinking it’s going to get easier is the fastest way to burnout and exhaustion. The truth is that life never gets easier, we just get stronger.”

P: Did your military experience have an impact on how you approach your own health and fitness?

K: “Absolutely. Navigating my first couple years at West Point taught me a very valuable lesson about myself: if I cut corners in one area of my life, it bleeds into other areas. When I would get lazy with my diet, I would slowly get lazy with my workouts, then schoolwork, training, etc. On the other hand, if I committed to maintaining a healthy diet or pushing myself in training, I felt myself working harder in the classroom or in the gym.

The same is true for me today, which is why I place such emphasis on my health and fitness. Knowing that I am treating my body right and staying committed to my health, allows me to be a more effective entrepreneur and, more importantly, a more attentive husband and father. I know first hand how tough it can be to maintain a healthy diet while also staying fit, especially as life gets busy and often stressful with work, family, and a social life. But, that’s exactly the reason I created Over Easy. If we can give people a better and more confident start to their day, hopefully they’ll be able to take that sense of accomplishment and confidence to other areas of their life, too.”

Doubling down on our support

More than a quarter of all rewards have gone to Black Lives Matter since we launched it within the app. To continue our commitment towards addressing implicit and explicit anti-blackness in this world, we would like to announce that we are matching all donations to Black Lives Matter claimed between June 8th and June 28th, in honor of Juneteenth, a holiday honoring the emancipation of African Americans from slavery.

We are very proud to be a part of this community! You all opened your ears, hearts, and minds to engage in this important civil discourse. Together we can create true dialogue and real, lasting, change in our society to become healthier, unified, and most importantly safe.

Here are additional ways you can support Black Lives Matter:

Black Lives Matter

Dear Paceline Community,

As I have thought deeply about the events of the past weeks and months, it’s made me realize that well-known and well-studied global health pandemics from coronavirus to heart disease and diabetes (that Paceline exists to combat directly) are nothing compared to the pandemic of bias and violence against black people in this country. The structures of systemic racism that are present across society are causing a pandemic so great and so pervasive that to cause change seems a mammoth task too great for any individual alone.

As a 38-year-old white male, I go back and forth in my head and helplessly wonder--if I was present in Minneapolis at Chicago Avenue and E. 38th Street, how could I have found my voice and leveraged my privilege in some way to change the outcome. What about the dynamics of that environment and situation meant that the many individuals present couldn't intervene? To me, it seems it all comes down to power. They didn't desist out of indifference, but out of fear. Clearly the balance of perceived power was so utterly tipped in favor of the police that even a large gathering couldn't intervene to save a man's life who was being so egregiously and brutally subdued.

I say all of this, not to suggest any actions could have led to different outcomes in the moment. But only to try to UNDERSTAND what was going on in this situation, and across the country in hundreds of similar situations, and why this happened, and still happens, in the year 2020.

Enough is enough!

At Paceline, we talk about solving health pandemics of a preventable nature. I believe, just as we can change the nature of preventive health, we MUST stop this pandemic of bias and violence. With the hard work, introspection, and bottom-up change of each person this crisis touches (all of us), change can be affected.

How do we become a community where our voices are all equal and not suppressed by fear? We must all dig deep, put ourselves in others’ shoes, think, listen, empathize, and UNDERSTAND what others go through. And only in doing so can we close the distance between us and strive to build a better future.

As a community Paceline has the ability to do this. We are more powerful together. With that, our small contribution will be adding a Black Lives Matter donation option to the Paceline rewards next week in support of the organizations who are on the frontlines of making these much needed changes in society.

Please, open your ears and then make your own voices heard. My personal hope is that if we all just do one or two things different from calling a friend to ask how they are in this time, making a donation to a cause that can make a difference, engage in civil discourse to create true dialogue, or just hug someone who needs a hug, that we can create real, lasting change, and that the image and memory of lives unjustly taken, will inspire clarity, courage, and humanity in us all.

In addition, we have listed a few resources below to help move understanding and the dialogue forward, including some of our favorites local to us.

Let’s move forward together!

Best,
Joel Lieginger
